Recognising abuse
Child abuse
Abuse is when someone hurts a child or young person, treats them in a way that makes them feel unsafe, or doesn't look after them properly.
Abuse can take many forms:
- neglect – not giving a child the basic things they need, like food, care, or warmth
- physical abuse – causing harm or injury
- emotional abuse – constant criticism, threats, or making someone feel worthless
- sexual abuse – any sexual touching, behaviour or communication that makes a child feel uncomfortable or unsafe
Abuse can happen anywhere; at home, at school, online, or in the community.
Every child has the right to be safe, and adults have a responsibility to protect them.
